WASP-107b, a super-puff planet, is leaking helium into space at an alarming rate, and it's on the verge of losing its entire atmosphere. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured a stunning sight: a large plume of helium gas evaporating from this giant planet.
This planet, discovered in 2017, is almost the same size as Jupiter but with a mass just a fraction of it. Its extremely low density and large size make it a unique find. But its location is even more intriguing. WASP-107b is seven times closer to its star than Mercury is to the Sun! This raises questions about planetary formation and migration.
Scientists believe that WASP-107b formed much farther from its star, but something, perhaps another planet, forced it to migrate closer over time. And this is the part most people miss: the extreme heat of its new orbit is literally melting away its atmosphere.
The JWST's observations confirmed this, spotting the exoplanet's helium cloud passing in front of its star, a full 1.5 hours before the planet itself. The researchers also found traces of other elements in the atmosphere, like oxygen, water, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, but no methane. This absence of methane suggests that other gases are being drawn up from deep within the planet's atmosphere due to intense heat-driven mixing.
While Earth also experiences some atmospheric loss, it's nothing compared to WASP-107b's extreme case. Studying such planets can help us understand atmospheric escape processes on planets like Venus, which lost its water over time.
